Cookie Policy

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you browse the website.

  • First-party cookies are files belonging to the website you are visiting. Only that website can read them. A website may also use external services that also have their own cookies – these are third-party cookies .
  • Persistent cookies are saved on your computer and are not automatically deleted when you close your browser, unlike session cookies, which are deleted when you close your browser.

Each time you visit the Commission’s websites, the system asks you whether you accept cookies or not .

In this way, the website remembers the user’s preferences (e.g. username, language, etc.) over a period of time.

This means you don’t have to re-enter the same data each time you visit the website.

Cookies may also be used to compile anonymous statistics about website usage.

What are cookies used for?

The most commonly used cookies on European Commission websites are “first party cookies.” These are cookies set and controlled by the Commission, not by an external organization.

However, browsing some Commission websites requires consent to third-party cookies.

There are 3 types of administrator cookies used :

  • storing visitor preferences
  • ensuring the operability of the website
  • collecting analytical data (about user behavior)

Visitor preferences

These are files created by the Commission and can only be read by it. The system remembers:

  • whether the user has accepted (or not) the cookie policy
  • whether the user has already responded to a survey notification (about the usefulness of the content on the site) so that the question is not asked again
